Battletome: Chaos Astartes

Chaos Astartes are now completed and have a battletome on the 40k warscrolls page.  As per usual, I'll talk a bit about some of my favorite elements.  Specifically, there is a spell in the Hereticus Discipline named Dark Summoning that I was pretty happy with.

Dark Summoning inflicts mortal wounds on all nearby units and then uses those wounds to summon a Daemon Hero.  So if you manage to line it up and do a bunch of wounds, you could summon a Bloodthirster or something, but if you just pop it off and hit a couple of units, you probably won't be able to do better than a Herald.  It's a good way to get some aoe damage going on regardless of daemon summoning, but I think it will probably be a fun spell to cast.

I also really like Worldwrithe.  It lets you place a token that emanates Deadly terrain until your next hero phase.  I put a mechanic like this in one of the battleplans for the Efengie campaign and it was both fun and strategically engaging.

More on the daemon summoning front, the Chaos Astartes battle trait is similar to the ability on Lord of Chaos where taking out an enemy hero lets you turn into a Daemon Prince, except that it's a little watered down so that it will proc more often, but be a little less reliable.

You'll also probably notice that the Chaos Astartes have Chapter Tactics just like their loyalist brethren.  I wanted to emulate that because I think the legions are important fluff that makes the army more thematic.  Also, if you wanted to, you could play traitor Space Wolves, or heretic Ultramarines without having to go too far afield.

  1. Looks good! Gonna point this out to Elle - she was looking at the profiles a couple weeks ago.

    A couple comments:
Should the Alpha Legion ability have a minimum distance form enemy units, to prevent deploying into combat at the least?

Diabolic Strength seems a bit weak. +1 to wound in exchange for a 1/3 chance of mortal wound for each wound roll. Sounds like it will self destruct the unit with little benefit. Maybe if the affected unit dealt mortal wounds instead of getting +1?

Fleshmetal Hide also sounds a bit weak. It's the same effect as arcane shield, but you can't pile in, charge, or move. Maybe for a reroll?

    1. For the Alpha Legion: Yes! Good catch, that will definitely get fixed.

For the two spells, the idea is that the +1 to save and +1 to wound are solid effects, so they can be cast on your own units, but that they have drawbacks and could also be cast on enemy units to make them stand still or self-destruct. It's intended to be a sort of "price of power" type effect where it's really easy to cast but cuts both ways.

  2. Are there any plans for warscrolls on the Chosen Space marines and the cultists? I just found these tonight and i must say i am extremely impressed with them, can't wait to try them out!

    1. I don't plan on making Chosen because they don't have any differentiation in the models. I do, however, plan on making cultists, I've just been trying to figure out where to put them (since they're not really Astartes).
